A group of 11 engineering students have built a hybrid car that can travel up to 250 km in just one litre of fuel. These students calling themselves Pak Wheelers and belonging to EME College of NUST in Islamabad has built the “Prodigy”, which is Pakistan’s first hybrid car. The car will be represented at the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2010 to be held in Malaysia in July.

The single-seater Prodigy has a gasoline-run combustion engine that works in conjunction with electric motors that makes it run more efficiently. It harvests energy lost during breaking and reuses it for moving. Energy is stored in supercapacitor banks through a microcontroller based Energy Management Unit.

Prodigy has a fiber glass body and can go up to 250 km in just one liter of fuel. Pak Wheelers began their senior year project with commitment to an environment friendly cause. Prodigy is the end-result and was financed by Telenor, and other industry sponsors in the country.
